…so yeah, so maybe some of us really blew it today, in several little, painful ways, Lord….we hurt people we wished we’d helped. Didn’t do things we wish we had. Listened to some things defensively instead of simply with humility. Walked straight through some things when it would have been better to just to kneel right down & pray.

And the realization is like an ointment for wounds: Your compassionate, perfect heart never demands the self-mutilation, self-condemnation, or self-emancipation of imperfect hearts. Your compassion never holds us to a standard of perfection, but always holds us in Your arms of grace.

Falling short can hurt longer than anyone else ever knows… and You cup our faces, Lord, right now, & look us right in the eye, so we can feel it in all our hurting bones & aching heart: In Christ, we are not held to a standard of perfection — we are held close by His arms of Grace. And there is no greater relief to be found in all the world: Jesus doesn’t demand your perfection. He desires your affection. Return to your first love.
Let’s rest in Him tonight. You are loved.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV)

Have you ever been going strong…for days, weeks, and even months, until one day you realize you’re not? You wonder of it’s just a slump or a phase or a hormonal spike, then admit it’s not going away…whatever it is.

To utter the words, “I think I need a reset,” can be scary.

But what if?

give-me-JesusWhat if God, in all of His Sovereignty, leads us to those vulnerable places? What if all along, He is allowing us to run out of steam so that we will finally…stop?

What if a “reset” is exactly what you need? And what does that really mean? I found some interesting descriptions of what it means to reset something. Here are a few of them.

  • to set back to the initial state
  • to set anew
  • to adjust again after an initial failure

How different would our lives be if we asked God to set things anew and sincerely meant it? Would our daily routines look the same? Would our attitudes remain as they are?

If you are sensing from the Holy Spirit that you need a real and lasting change in heart and mind, I encourage you to spend some unhurried time in that secret, quiet place, where you can meet with God. Our own Savior met with the Father in prayer, and prayed for all of us who are kept by Him. And in that prayer, He was specific about the things needed to live in this world but not be “of” it.

“Lord, I long for those moments early in my faith when I felt your closeness, your joy, your energy and zest for life. I confess that the daily grind has ground down my passion for you. I confess that I allow the cares of the world to choke out the joy of the gospel. Lord, turn my heart toward you again. Fix my eyes on you, fix my heart on you. Help me have a reset in my faith and in my life, starting today. Renew my heart, renew my life for you and your ways. Help me see the daily routines of life as moments to gracefully submit to your will. Thank you for being the Lord of my life everyday. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

This devotional was adapted from Jennifer Waddle’s article, What to Do When You Need to Reset Your Life and Faith. You can read that piece in full, here.

02.14.17 Wacky Wonderful Valentine’s Day!

Valentine's love in the eye

Some Thoughts on Valentine’s Day Love

  • I love you not because of who you are, but because of who I am when I am with you.
  • No man or woman is worth your tears, and the one who is, won’t make you cry.
  • Just because someone doesn’t love you the way you want them to, doesn’t mean they don’t love you with all they have.
  • A true friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your heart.
  • The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside them knowing you can’t have them.
  • Never frown, even when you are sad, because you never know who is falling in love with your smile.
  • To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.
  • Don’t waste your time on someone, who isn’t willing to waste their time on you.
  • Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one, so that when we finally meet the person, we will know how to be grateful.
  • Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened.
  • There’s always going to be people that hurt you so what you have to do is keep on trusting and just be more careful about who you trust next time around.
  • Make yourself a better person and know who you are before you try and know someone else and expect them to know you.
  • Don’t try so hard, the best things come when you least expect them to.
  • Love at first sight

A man was sitting on the edge of the bed, watching his wife, who was looking at herself in the mirror. Since her birthday was not far off he asked what she’d like to have for her birthday.

‘I’d like to be six again’, she replied, still looking in the mirror.

On the morning of her Birthday, he arose early, made her a nice big bowl of Lucky Charms, and then took her to Six Flags theme park. What a day! He put her on every ride in the park; the Death Slide, the Wall of Fear, the Screaming Roller Coaster, everything there was.

Five hours later they staggered out of the theme park. Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down. He then took her to a McDonald’s where he ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a chocolate shake.

Then it was off to a movie, popcorn, a soda pop, and her favorite candy, M&M’s. What a fabulous adventure!

Finally, she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed exhausted. He leaned over his wife with a big smile and lovingly asked, ‘Well Dear, what was it like being six again?’

Her eyes slowly opened and her expression suddenly changed. ‘I meant my dress size, you retard!’

The MORAL of the story: Even when a man is listening, he is probably gonna get it wrong.

By Rev. Bob Adams, Trinity Baptist Church, Hammond, LA

“To know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:19

The Apostle Paul prayed for the Ephesian believers to be filled, overflowing, with an understanding and experience of Jesus’ love. He knew the more fully they understood Jesus’ love the more they would experience the strength of abundant aliveness, God’s aliveness, regardless of the circumstances.

Through the years, here and there, wonderful people have misunderstood the meaning of God’s love and counseled that I was too much about love and not enough about other things. God’s love is not the weak, permissive, faddish love of our culture. Rather, His is a love that inevitably creates beautiful holiness and sends us out to live unselfishly for Jesus and others. We can never be too much about God’s kind of love. Go ahead, go overboard with God’s love today! Try to drown people in grace and watch them come up more alive than ever!

Red roses were her favorites, her name was also Rose.
And every year her husband sent them, tied with pretty bows.
The year he died, the roses were delivered to her door.
The card said, “Be my Valentine,” like all the years before.

Each year he sent her roses, and the note would always say,
“I love you even more this year, than last year on this day.”
“My love for you will always grow, with every passing year.”
She knew this was the last time that the roses would appear.

She thought, he ordered roses in advance before this day.
Her loving husband did not know, that he would pass away.
He always liked to do things early, way before the time.
Then, if he got too busy, everything would work out fine.

She trimmed the stems, and placed them in a very special vase.
Then, sat the vase beside the portrait of his smiling face.
She would sit for hours, in her husband’s favorite chair.
While staring at his picture, and the roses sitting there.

A year went by, and it was hard to live without her mate.
With loneliness and solitude, that had become her fate.
Then, the very hour, as on Valentines before,
The doorbell rang, and there were roses, sitting by her door.

She brought the roses in, and then just looked at them in shock.
Then, went to get the telephone, to call the florist shop.
The owner answered, and she asked him, if he would explain,
Why would someone do this to her, causing her such pain?

“I know your husband passed away, more than a year ago,”
The owner said, “I knew you’d call, and you would want to know.”
“The flowers you received today, were paid for in advance.”
“Your husband always planned ahead, he left nothing to chance.”

“There is a standing order, that I have on file down here,
And he has paid, well in advance, you’ll get them every year.
There also is another thing, that I think you should know,
He wrote a special little card…he did this years ago.”

“Then, should ever, I find out that he’s no longer here,
That’s the card…that should be sent, to you the following year.”
She thanked him and hung up the phone, her tears now flowing hard.
Her fingers shaking, as she slowly reached to get the card.

Inside the card, she saw that he had written her a note.
Then, as she stared in total silence, this is what he wrote…
“Hello my love, I know it’s been a year since I’ve been gone,
I hope it hasn’t been too hard for you to overcome.”

“I know it must be lonely, and the pain is very real.
For if it was the other way, I know how I would feel.
The love we shared made everything so beautiful in life.
I loved you more than words can say, you were the perfect wife.”

“You were my friend and lover, you fulfilled my every need.
I know it’s only been a year, but please try not to grieve.
I want you to be happy, even when you shed your tears.
That is why the roses will be sent to you for years.”

“When you get these roses, think of all the happiness,
That we had together, and how both of us were blessed.
I have always loved you and I know I always will.
But, my love, you must go on, you have some living still.”

“Please…try to find happiness, while living out your days.
I know it is not easy, but I hope you find some ways.
The roses will come every year, and they will only stop,
When your door’s not answered, when the florist stops to knock.”

“He will come five times that day, in case you have gone out.
But after his last visit, he will know without a doubt,
To take the roses to the place, where I’ve instructed him,
And place the roses where we are, together once again.”

Leaving the store, I couldn’t find my keys. They weren’t in my pockets. Suddenly I realized I must have left them in the car. Frantically, I headed for the parking lot.

My husband has scolded me many times for leaving my keys in the cars ignition. Hes afraid that the car could be stolen. As I looked around the parking lot, I realized he was right. The parking lot was empty. I immediately called the police. I have them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the car and that it had been stolen.

Then I made the most difficult call of all to my husband: “I left my keys in the car and its been stolen.” There was a moment of silence. I thought the call had been disconnected, but then I heard his voice. “Are you kidding me?” he barked, “I dropped you off!” Now it was my turn to be silent.

Embarrassed, I said, “well, come and get me” He retorted, “I will just as soon as I convince this cop that I didn’t steal your damn car!” Welcome to the golden years….
