7 THINGS ONLY BABY BOOMERS AND ALL OLDER FOLKS WILL UNDERSTAND!

As Baby Boomers, we’ve been around for some of the more historic and important moments of our Nation’s history. Cultural changes and technological advancements have improved life for many. On the flip side, a lot of things we grew up with are no longer around. Sure, we may have the ability to flip through 200 channels to find exactly what we want to watch, no matter what time it is; but there’s something so charming and nostalgic about the Good Old Days (I like to think of it as a special way of life that only us Baby Boomers are privy too)! Take a trip down memory lane with us, and check out the following seven things that only a Baby Boomer would understand.

FIVE AND DIME STORES

1

Before the days of online shopping and super-mega-department stores, we had the five-and-dime store! It seemed like you could find anything you needed at one of these variety stores, and for a good price too (hence the name). Branches like Woolworth’s, Ben Franklin, and Kress were the place to go for anything from penny candy to household goods

TELEVISION CHANNELS SIGNING OFF

Not only did we have just three channels to choose from, but these channels actually signed-off at the end of the day! No DVRs, no On-Demand…if you missed your favorite TV show, you had to wait until next week! Most times, a channel would air the National Anthem, followed by the test pattern shown below.

2

TALKING TO AN OPERATOR

Remember when you would pick up the phone and talk to an operator to make a call? Before the system became automated thanks to computers, Switchboard Operators used to manually connect you to your recipient. In fact, how many of you remember party lines? You could pick up the phone and actually hear your neighbors talking! It’s baffling to think just how far we’ve come in regards to telephones.

From: Wiki Commons

SKATE KEYS

“I got a brand new pair of roller skates, You got a brand new key…” Of course we’re talking about the skate keys we used to tighten our roller skates! The old fashioned metal roller skates were actually strapped onto your shoes, and in order to get them to fit, you needed a skate key! We used to wear them around our necks as a necklace so that they were never out of reach when we needed them.

From: Wiki Commons

GAS RATIONING

A popular gripe these days is just how expensive gas can be; but if you’re a Baby Boomer, you probably can recall a time when you couldn’t get gas depending on what day it was. If you remember the gas crises of the ’70s, then you probably remember the long lines, the high prices, and yes, the rationing. If your car’s license plate ended in an odd-number, you could only buy gas on an odd-numbered day of the month (and vice-versa for even numbers).

From: Wiki Commons

DUCK AND COVER DRILLS

We all probably remember the drill. Duck and cover. In the ’50s, tensions with the Soviet Union made nuclear war seem inevitable. As a result, many of us were taught to duck under our desks and cover our heads while at school. In fact, there was an entire film centered around the concept, featuring Bert the Turtle!

GREEN STAMPS

Probably the best rewards program around, collecting Green Stamps and eventually trading them in for something out of the catalogue is one of my favorite memories of the Good Old Days. You would earn the stamps based on how much money you spent at various retail organizations (mostly supermarkets and gas stations), and could trade them in for anything from furniture to televisions!

A VERY HEARTWARMING VALENTINE STORY

Sixteen years ago, when the oldest of my three girls was in third grade, I saw how Valentines Day was a ‘big deal’ to celebrate here in the school system; even in the younger grades. Seems like there were lots of ‘boyfriends’ and ‘girlfriends’ exchanging gifts, balloons, flowers, etc.

Well, my girls didn’t need ‘boyfriends’ at that age so I decided that I would fill that need for the time being.

What a treat it was to see the face of my firstborn that day when I entered into her classroom, dressed to the hilt in my black double-breasted suit and made my way over to her desk with a single wrapped rose and gave her a hug and a kiss in front of all her classmates, and her teary-eyed teacher.

I was hooked.

So for the past sixteen years, all three of my girls have grown to expect with anticipation this annual ritual.

Call it laziness, but I did shed the dressing up in a suit several years back. And on their senior year, they get a dozen roses.

So today, I delivered my last bouquet.

I even planned ahead this year, having brought them (the dozen roses) to my classroom where I teach the night before since I drive a bus this year as well and logistically, faced a few more challenges.

But I was not disappointed by the glowing smile of Daughter # 3.

It was special, as always.

I … just didn’t anticipate the tears that would flow as I made my way back across the campus grounds realizing that today was the end of an era.— an era that I will treasure always as I am hopeful that my three gifts from heaven will as well.

SHARING A MEAL – One of my favorite stories!

An elderly couple walk into a fast food restaurant. They order one hamburger, one order of fries and one drink.

The old man unwraps the plain hamburger and carefully cuts it in half. He places one half in front of his wife. He then carefully counts out the fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placing one pile in front of his wife. He takes a sip of the drink, his wife takes a sip and then sets the cup down between them. As he begins to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them keep looking over and whispering “That poor old couple – all they can afford is one meal for the two of them.”

As the man begins to eat his fries a young man comes to the table. He politely offers to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man replies that they”re just fine – they”re just used to sharing everything.

The surrounding people noticed the little old lady hadn’t eaten a bite. She sits there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink.

Again the young man comes over and begs them to let him buy another meal for them.

This time the old woman says “No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything.”

As the old man finishes and was wipes his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again comes over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asks “May I ask what is it you are waiting for?”

The old woman answers… “THE TEETH.”

“40 YEARS LATER”
Homeless man asked me what I was doing, I said taking pictures of interesting things. He said, you’re not taking pictures of me are you, I said no no… He said, “I haven’t had my picture taken in 40 years.”I said, well that’s not good, you don’t have any history of yourself over that time. All of a sudden, he took off his cap stood in front of me and said, “go ahead, take my picture”. I said sure… and here it is…

PETRA, JORDAN

More than 2,000 years ago, the Nabataeans built the town of Petra into the mountains, now the most-visited tourist attraction of Jordan. Petra is also known as the Rose City due to the color of the stone from which it was carved. This significant example of ancient civilization shows just how astonishing the world can be.

What looks like a canvas of extraordinary color is a range of mountains in China. The rainbow formation is the result of red sandstone and mineral deposits being laid down for over 24 million years.

I was walking down life’s highway a long time ago. One day I saw a sign that read, “HEAVEN’S GROCERY STORE”.

As I got a little closer, the door opened wide, and then I found myself standing inside.

I saw a host of ANGELS. They were standing everywhere. One handed me a basket and said, “My Child, shop with care”.

Everything a human needed was in that grocery store. And if you couldn’t carry all, you could come back the next day for more.

First, I got some PATIENCE. LOVE was in the same row. Further down was UNDERSTANDING; you need that everywhere you go.

I got a box or two of WISDOM, a bag or two of FAITH. I just couldn’t miss the HOLY GHOST, for it was all over the place.

I stopped to get some STRENGTH and COURAGE TO HELP ME RUN THIS RACE. By then my basket was getting full, but I remembered I needed some GRACE.

I didn’t forget SALVATION, for SALVATION was free.So I tried to get enough of that to save both you and me.

Then I started up to the counter to pay my grocery bill. For I thought I had everything to do the MASTER’S will.

As I went up the aisle, I saw PRAYER; and I just had to put that in, for I knew when I stepped outside, I would run into sin.

PEACE and JOY were plentiful; they were last on the shelf SONG and PRAISE were hanging near, so I just helped myself

Then I said to the angel, “Now, how much do I owe?” He smiled again and said, “MY CHILD, GOD PAID YOUR BILL A LONG, LONG TIME AGO.”

Sharon Deloch's photo.

Lawyers should never ask a Georgia grandma a question if they aren’t prepared for the answer.

In a trial, a Southern small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand. He approached her and asked, ‘Mrs. Jones, do you know me?’

She responded, ‘Why, yes, I do know you, Mr. Williams. I’ve known you since you were a boy, and frankly, you’ve been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you’re a big shot when you haven’t the brains to realize you’ll never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you.’

The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, ‘Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?’

She again replied, ‘Why yes, I do. I’ve known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He’s lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. He can’t build a normal relationship with anyone, and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women. One of them was your wife. Yes, I know him.’

The defense attorney nearly died.

The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench and, in a very quiet voice, said, ‘If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I’ll send you both to the electric chair.
